First time visit - recommendations where to stay/visit

Hoping to stay in the Palm Springs area beginning of December of 3 nights on way to Las Vegas from Los Angeles. Never been to this area of California before and thought would be a good base to explore? Where is a good area to stay with ease of access to Joshua Tree and Ariel Tram? Many thanks

Palm Springs is a great base for exploring the California Desert region, especially if it’s your first visit. Staying for three nights in early December allows you to enjoy cooler temperatures while taking advantage of desert scenery, nearby mountains, and unique attractions.

Recommended Areas to Stay:

  • Downtown Palm Springs: Central location with easy access to restaurants, shops, and nightlife. Offers a convenient base for day trips and is about a 30–40 minute drive to Joshua Tree National Park.
  • South Palm Springs / Near Tramway Road: Ideal for easy access to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Staying on or near Tramway Road cuts down drive time to the tram and surrounding hiking areas.
  • North Palm Springs / Near Joshua Tree Road: Closer to Joshua Tree National Park’s west entrance. Great if your priority is spending more time exploring Joshua Tree than the city itself.
  • Cathedral City or Rancho Mirage: Just south of Palm Springs, offers a quieter setting with resort-style accommodations while still being reasonably close to downtown and major attractions.

Must-See Attractions & Day Trips:

  • Joshua Tree National Park: Famous for its unique rock formations, hiking trails, and iconic Joshua trees. The west entrance is closer to Palm Springs, making it a manageable half-day or full-day trip.
  • Palm Springs Aerial Tramway: Scenic ride from desert floor to the cooler mountain environment. Offers hiking, viewpoints, and sometimes snow in December at the top.
  • Downtown Palm Springs: Art galleries, boutique shopping, mid-century architecture, and Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
  • Indian Canyons: Hiking and exploring palm oases, just a short drive south of downtown.
  • Joshua Tree Sky’s the Limit: Optional evening stargazing tours in the desert if you want to experience dark skies and clear desert nights.

Tips for Visiting:

  • Rent a car to make day trips to Joshua Tree and the tramway easy.
  • Book accommodations in advance, especially if you want a resort or boutique hotel in downtown or near Tramway Road.
  • Layer clothing: December desert days are mild, but mornings and evenings can be chilly.
  • Start your Joshua Tree visit early in the day to maximize daylight for hiking and photography.

By staying in or near central Palm Springs, you have the best combination of city amenities and convenient access to both the tramway and Joshua Tree, making it an excellent hub for a three-night stopover on your way to Las Vegas.
