Do I have enough time?

Hello,

I'm looking to buy a plane ticket from Guangzhou to Jeju Island, S. Korea, but the layover in Shanghai is 1 hr 55 min on China Eastern (same airline all the way through).

My question is:

Is 1.55hr enough time to change flights?

Thank you

For a layover of 1 hour 55 minutes at Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) on China Eastern, staying on the same airline for both legs, this is generally considered workable but a bit tight. Since it’s a same-airline itinerary, your checked luggage should be automatically transferred to the next flight, and you typically do not need to clear immigration if you stay in the transit area for an international-to-international connection.

Here are some important details and tips:

  • Minimum Connection Time (MCT): China Eastern’s official minimum connection time at PVG for international-to-international flights is usually around 1 hour 30 minutes. Your 1 hour 55 minutes is slightly above this, which is generally sufficient.
  • Transit procedure: You will likely remain in the international transit area, which avoids immigration and customs. You just need to follow the transfer signs to your departure gate.
  • Gate changes: PVG is a large airport, and sometimes gates can be far apart, especially between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 (if your flights are split between terminals). Check which terminal both flights use; China Eastern usually operates from Terminal 2.
  • Potential delays: Even small delays on the incoming flight could make the connection tight. Airlines generally have staff to assist tight connections, but you should be prepared to move quickly between gates.

Additional tips:

  • Check your boarding passes in advance to confirm gates and terminal.
  • Use online check-in for both flights if possible to save time.
  • Travel light if you can, so you can move quickly within the airport.
  • If your first flight is delayed, inform the airline staff immediately; they can help expedite your connection.

In summary, 1 hour 55 minutes is enough for a same-airline international-to-international connection at PVG under normal circumstances, but it’s slightly tight. Being prepared and knowing your terminals/gates can help make the connection smooth.
