Best section of GW for Senior Citizens
Is there a section of the wall that is more senior citizen-friendly ? My husband and I can handle hikes that may require more physical exertion, however, we are traveling with two seniors (our mothers) who are ages 70 and 84.
I have read that Mutianyu is probably the best bet with its cable cars (is this a gondola?), chairlift, and toboggan. Badaling, on the other hand, offers elevators and wheelchair accessability. I have read that both sites have good, gentler, more accessible paths.
To be honest, if a toboggan is the only way down at Mutianyu, it is very unlikely that either mother will descend this way, especially if it's one person per toboggan. I think staying and wandering through the shops at the foot of the ascension of the wall will likely be what they'd do.
Thanks in advance for your input.
For senior citizens, accessibility and ease of movement are key when choosing a Great Wall section. Both Mutianyu and Badaling are popular options, but they cater to slightly different needs.
Mutianyu:
- Mutianyu is well-known for its scenic beauty and relatively well-preserved structure.
- The ascent can be done via a chairlift or cable car (the cable car is similar to a gondola, enclosed or open depending on your choice), which makes it easier for seniors to reach the top.
- For descent, there is a toboggan slide, which is optional and often one person per toboggan; if seniors are uncomfortable with this, they can take the chairlift or cable car down.
- The walking path at the top is fairly gentle for short distances, but some areas are steep; your seniors can choose to walk only a portion or stay near the entrance with shops and viewpoints.
Badaling:
- Badaling is more developed and is considered the most senior-friendly section.
- It has elevators at the base leading up to some sections, making it easier for those with limited mobility.
- Wheelchair accessibility is available in certain areas, and the paths are generally less steep compared to Mutianyu.
- There are plenty of resting spots, railings, and safety features, which are ideal for elderly visitors.
Recommendations:
- If your mothers are willing to use a cable car but not the toboggan, Mutianyu can be a good choice. They can enjoy the shops and scenery near the base or ascend via lift for views without strenuous walking.
- If maximum comfort and minimal physical exertion are the priority, Badaling is likely the better option due to elevators, gentler paths, and more structured facilities.
- Both sections have souvenir shops and resting areas near the base, so seniors who prefer not to climb much can still enjoy the experience.
In summary, for seniors aged 70 and 84, Badaling provides the easiest access and safest walking conditions. Mutianyu is suitable if they are comfortable with chairlifts and prefer a slightly less crowded, scenic experience, but avoid the toboggan unless confident.
