Quickest and most convenient way to fly from Cotai Strip (Ma

Hi everyone,

We are a family of 4 staying on the Cotai Strip in Macau and after this trip we plan to go to Sanya. We’ll need to fly there, and I’m trying to figure out the quickest and most convenient way.

From what I understand, there are only three main airports in the region:

-Zhuhai Jinwan Airport (ZUH)

-Shenzhen Bao’an Airport (SZX)

-Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)

No matter which one we choose, it seems we’ll need to do a border crossing before we can fly.

A couple of questions:

Which airport is generally the most convenient option to reach Sanya from Macau/Cotai?

If we arrange a private driver to take us to the airport, can the driver stay in the car with our luggage while we go through immigration, or do we all need to move together with luggage across the border?

Any recent experiences or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Traveling from the Cotai Strip in Macau to Sanya requires crossing into mainland China or Hong Kong before taking a flight. Each airport option has its own advantages and considerations, mainly related to convenience, travel time, and border crossing procedures.

1. Zhuhai Jinwan Airport (ZUH)

  • Distance: Approximately 30–40 minutes by car from the Cotai Strip, depending on border traffic.
  • Border crossing: You need to pass through the Macau-Zhuhai border at Gongbei. All travelers must go through immigration and customs; the driver cannot stay with your luggage while you cross. Luggage must accompany passengers.
  • Flight options: Smaller airport, fewer daily flights to Sanya, but generally quick security checks once you’re inside the airport.
  • Tip: Arrive early to accommodate potential border delays, especially during peak hours.

2. Shenzhen Bao’an Airport (SZX)

  • Distance: Roughly 2–2.5 hours from Cotai by car or bus, including border crossing at Macau–Zhuhai or Shenzhen–Hong Kong border.
  • Border crossing: You must pass through immigration with all luggage; the driver cannot stay in the car during this process.
  • Flight options: More frequent flights to Sanya and competitive fares compared to Zhuhai.
  • Tip: Consider a private driver or shuttle with prior experience in cross-border travel to save time.

3. Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)

  • Distance: About 2.5–3 hours including Macau-Hong Kong border crossing via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge or ferry to Hong Kong.
  • Border crossing: All travelers and luggage must go through Hong Kong immigration. Drivers cannot accompany luggage through immigration.
  • Flight options: Largest selection of flights to Sanya, often at the best fares, and with frequent departures.
  • Tip: Factor in extra time for Hong Kong customs and security, especially during peak travel periods.

General Tips:

  • For a family of 4, Zhuhai is generally the quickest in terms of travel time from the Cotai Strip, but flight options are limited.
  • Shenzhen and Hong Kong airports offer more frequent flights and potentially better prices but require longer transit times.
  • Always allow extra time for border crossings; queues can be unpredictable.
  • All passengers and luggage must cross the border together; the driver cannot remain with your luggage while you go through immigration.
  • Booking flights in advance and arranging a reliable private driver familiar with cross-border travel can minimize stress.

In summary, if minimizing travel time is your priority, Zhuhai is the most convenient. If you prefer more flight options and flexibility, Shenzhen or Hong Kong are better, keeping in mind the longer journey and immigration process.
