PEK a layover advice please

Hi, We are travelling through PEK soon on a single ticket and have 7.50 layover. Air China have offered a layover hotel, and as NZ citizens we currently don’t need a visa as there is a special arrangement in place until the end of the year.

I’ve read some comments saying this is too short to be worthwhile as it takes up to 2 h to negotiate the airport official checks in each direction.

We don’t need to collect our luggage (I have confirmed this with the airline) so would appreciate any advice please? Thank you

With a 7.5-hour layover at PEK (Beijing Capital International Airport) on a single ticket and without needing to collect luggage, it is technically possible to leave the airport and see a little, but there are important considerations.

Firstly, even without visa requirements for NZ citizens under the temporary arrangement, leaving the airport involves immigration and security procedures. These can be time-consuming, especially during peak hours. Typically:

  • Immigration and security on arrival may take 30–60 minutes.
  • Leaving the airport, traveling to nearby areas, and returning requires additional transit time (consider traffic).
  • Security re-checks before the connecting flight can take another 30–60 minutes.

Given these timings, the actual window for sightseeing outside the airport may only be 2–3 hours, which limits what you can practically do.

Options to consider:

  • Use the layover hotel inside PEK: This is the most convenient and least stressful option. You can rest, refresh, and have meals without worrying about transit times or security checks.
  • Short city excursion: If you are confident in time management, you could take a taxi or airport shuttle to a nearby area such as the Olympic Park or nearby attractions. Allocate at least 1.5–2 hours each way for transit and checks.
  • Stay in the airport lounges: PEK has several lounges where you can relax, have meals, and shower. This avoids any risk of missing your connecting flight.

Given that your layover is under 8 hours, most travelers would find it too short to make a full city visit worthwhile. A layover hotel or airport lounge is generally the safest and most comfortable choice, especially considering potential delays and mandatory re-check procedures.

If you do decide to leave the airport, plan conservatively, and ensure you are back at least 2 hours before your next flight to complete security and boarding procedures.
