🏘 Wat Yannawa was originally built during the Ayutthaya period and was initially called Wat Khok Khwai (Buffalo Pen Temple) due to the large number of Tavoy people living in the area who traded buffaloes.
🙏🏽 During the Thonburi period, it was elevated to the status of a royal temple and renamed Wat Khok Krabue (Buffalo Pen Temple).
⛵ In the reign of King Rama III, the temple underwent restoration, and a Chinese junk-shaped chedi was constructed instead of the traditional stupa. This was done to preserve the memory of Chinese junks, which were disappearing from Thailand. The temple was then renamed Wat Yannawa.
Key attractions within the temple include:
⛵ The Yannawa Junk: A large and small chedi are situated on the junk, with the Buddha of the Sky, Deity of Destiny, other Buddha statues, and a footprint of the Buddha enshrined at the stern.
🏠 The Ubosot (Ordination Hall): Built during the reign of King Rama I, it features significant murals commissioned by King Rama III.
🏢 Maha Jessadabodin Building: Constructed in 1987 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of King Rama III's birth. This three-story Thai-style building is adorned with five spire-like structures and serves as a sermon hall, a place for religious practices, and a meeting hall.
🏣 Tripitaka Hall: A three-story Thai-style building with three spire-like structures, used as a library and for preserving ancient lacquered and gilded Tripitaka cabinets.
