Hokkaido maple viewing camping itinerary suggestions (7-day version)

Drive freely, follow the maple leaves all the way north and south, and experience the most beautiful autumn

Day 1: Arrive at New Chitose Airport → Sapporo
• Arrive at New Chitose Airport and pick up your campervan
• Stock up at a supermarket (LANDBRIAD Chitose Shopping Center is recommended)
• Depart for Jozankei Onsen, a famous maple viewing hot spring area in Hokkaido
Recommended camping sites:
• Jozankei Natural Village (surrounded by forests, very atmospheric at night)

Day 2: Sapporo → Asahikawa → Daisetsuzan (Asahidake)
• Drive to Daisetsuzan National Park (approximately 3.5 hours)
• Take the Asahidake Ropeway to see the earliest autumn leaves in Hokkaido
• You can choose to take a leisurely walk to the "Sujimi Pond" and take beautiful photos, which is super dreamy!
Recommended camping sites:
• Asahidake Youth Travel Village (basic facilities, convenient for mountain climbing)

Day 3: Daisetsuzan → Sounkyo
• Short trip to Sounkyo
• Enjoy the spectacular red leaves in the canyon, and see the Galaxy Falls and Meteor Falls
• You can also relax in the Sounkyo Hot Springs
Recommended camping sites:
• Sounkyo Plateau Campground (extremely rich autumn colors)

Day 4: Sounkyo → Biei → Furano
• Drive to the dreamy Biei Hills, with golden and orange rural scenery all the way
• Pass by "Shikisai-no-Oka" and "Blue Pond"
• There is also a small but beautiful maple leaf spot near Furano
Recommended camping sites:
• Hoshino TOMAMU Camping Ground (have the opportunity to see the beautiful starry sky)

Day 5: Furano → Lake Shikotsu
• Go south to Lake Shikotsu, a lake with the highest transparency in Japan + surrounded by maple leaves
• Canoeing and walking along the lake are great for slowing down your pace
Recommended camping sites:
• Meide Campground (camping site by the lake, super dreamy scenery)

Day 6: Lake Shikotsu → Lake Toya
• Continue south to Lake Toya
• Take a walk along the lake or take a sightseeing boat tour
• You can also watch the Toyako Onsen Town fireworks at night (available until mid-October)
Recommended camping sites:
• Toya Water Village Campground (fully equipped and with great views)

Day 7: Lake Toya → New Chitose Airport
• Pack up at your leisure and drive back to New Chitose Airport
• Return the car, and end your perfect Hokkaido maple viewing camping trip!

Tips:
• Late September to early October: Daisetsuzan and Sounkyo are the most beautiful
• Mid-October: Lake Shikotsu, Lake Toya, and Sapporo area turn red
• Remember to bring heating equipment (parking heater in camper is a must!)
• The temperature difference is large at night, so be sure to prepare warm clothes
