Changbai Island, located on the banks of the Songhua River in Jilin City, is the northernmost large-scale wintering ground for waterfowl in China. Every October, a flock of wild ducks from Siberia migrates here. This flock is massive, numbering in the tens of thousands, primarily consisting of ruddy shelducks, with a few mallards and mergansers as well. They spend the entire winter here and return to their homeland in March when the spring breeze warms the earth.

This large-scale migration has been ongoing for over 20 years. I remember visiting this place a few years ago to see the wild ducks. Back then, there were hardly any visitors. Now, the area has been developed with health trails and various ice and snow recreational activities, attracting more and more people to witness the spectacle. The sheer number of ducks is astonishing, and many come to see the breathtaking scene of thousands of wild ducks taking flight. The sky is filled with ducks, while the Songhua River below flows gently, displaying a vivid Fuji blue color. The shores are blanketed in snow, creating a truly beautiful sight. This is the romance of winter in the North ❤️

Behind this flock of wild ducks lies a touching story. Initially, no one protected these birds, and some even hunted them secretly. Later, I heard that someone built a shelter to protect them from poachers. This person has been guarding these wild duck spirits for 26 years. He is affectionately known as "Bird Uncle," and his name is Ren Jianguo. Now in his sixties, he has recently fallen ill and been hospitalized. His niece has taken over his role, becoming the second-generation bird protector.

Tips: It's recommended to visit in the afternoon. Eagles usually hunt in the afternoon, and wild ducks are more active in flight during this time.
