Xizhou, about an hour's drive north of Dali Ancient Town, is an ancient town near the sea, yet not directly on it. Historically, it was a major trading post on the Tea-Horse Road.
I had assumed that, since it was close to the ancient town and a popular check-in destination for tourists, it would be heavily commercialized, with most traditional houses renovated, similar to Qibao in Shanghai, leaving the town devoid of its original inhabitants.
Upon arrival, I discovered that while the area was bustling with people and shops, the backstreets and alleys still held numerous ancient residences and old houses, where the original inhabitants still rule. The atmosphere of everyday life was still strong, making it well worth a visit.
