Drive from Phoenix Airport to Flaggstaff
My first drive from Phoenix Airport to Flaggstaff coming from Maine.
Is the highway 17 a good drive with some service stops along the way? I am
a bit nervous about heights or weird hairpin turns as I have not done this before.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Driving from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport to Flagstaff via I-17 is the most direct route and is generally safe and well-maintained, though it does include some elevation changes as you approach the Mogollon Rim. Many first-time drivers wonder about the road conditions, stops, and any challenging sections, so here’s a detailed breakdown.
Route Overview:
- The drive is approximately 145 miles and usually takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic.
- I-17 is a four-lane interstate for the entire route, with passing lanes in steeper areas.
- The route gradually climbs from the Sonoran Desert floor near Phoenix to the higher elevations near Flagstaff, reaching over 7,000 feet.
Road Conditions and Driving Tips:
- There are some long stretches with curves as you approach the Mogollon Rim, but the turns are not hairpin; they are generally gentle, banked curves suitable for highway speeds.
- The steeper sections might feel a bit intimidating if you’re sensitive to heights, especially around the scenic overlooks. Drive in the right lane if you prefer a slower, steadier pace.
- Watch for occasional trucks and RVs, which may move slowly uphill. Use passing lanes when necessary.
- Weather can change quickly in higher elevations—check the forecast in Flagstaff for snow or ice in winter months.
Service Stops and Amenities:
- There are multiple gas stations and fast-food options along I-17, including in the towns of Camp Verde, Sedona, and the smaller communities like Black Canyon City.
- Rest areas are available near Cordes Junction and at a few points closer to Flagstaff.
- Plan for at least one stop if you want to stretch your legs or grab a snack. Sedona offers a nice mid-point for a quick break and some scenic views.
Scenic Considerations:
- The drive features beautiful desert-to-forest transitions, with red rock vistas near Sedona and pine forests as you near Flagstaff.
- If you’re not in a hurry, consider a short detour into Sedona for pictures and refreshments.
Overall, I-17 is a straightforward and safe drive for first-timers, with manageable curves and plenty of services along the way. Take it easy on the climbs and enjoy the scenery!
