Hong Kong to Macau by ferry or taxi ?

Hello,

We’re planning to stay in Hongkong for 5 days and then go to Macau for 3 days. I’ll be traveling on Tuesday to Macau. I’m now confused because of following Turbojet ferry travel:

1. china ferry terminal shows that it operates everyday

2. Hongkong to Macau ferry terminal shows that it operates 3 days a week- Monday, Thursday, sat and sun

3. From airport it shows it operates on Tuesday. Do I have to go to airport if I’m traveling on Tuesday ? But as I’m already out of airport, will it be possible to go from airport ferry terminal to Macau ? If not- which terminal should I take to travel to Macau?

4. Which option is less expensive ? Ferry or via taxi?

If taxi- where do I get taxi from ?

5. We will have 2 x 30kg check-in luggage and 2x 7kg carry on luggage, do we have to pay extra for check-in luggage ? If so- how much ?

if someone can please clarify ? I’m confused.

Traveling from Hong Kong to Macau can be done conveniently either by ferry or by taxi, depending on your preferences for speed, cost, and convenience with luggage.

Ferry travel:

  • There are several ferry terminals in Hong Kong that operate to Macau: Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan, China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui, and the SkyPier at Hong Kong International Airport.
  • If you are already in the city (not at the airport), you should use either the Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal (Sheung Wan) or China Ferry Terminal (Tsim Sha Tsui), as SkyPier is accessible only to passengers arriving at the airport.
  • Ferry schedules vary: most city terminals operate multiple times per day, but SkyPier schedules depend on flight arrivals. For travel on Tuesday from the city, you should take the ferry from Sheung Wan or Tsim Sha Tsui terminal.
  • Cost-wise, ferry tickets are generally cheaper than taking a taxi across the border. TurboJET and Cotai Water Jet are common ferry operators, with standard fares around HKD 160–200 per adult. Children and seniors may have discounted fares.
  • Luggage: Standard ferry tickets usually include 1–2 pieces of checked luggage (20–30kg each) and one carry-on. For additional pieces or overweight luggage, extra charges may apply, typically around HKD 50–100 per additional bag depending on the operator.

Taxi travel:

  • Direct taxis from Hong Kong to Macau are not generally allowed for tourists due to border regulations. Most travelers who prefer a private car transfer use pre-booked cross-border limousine services.
  • Limousine services pick up from your hotel or other city locations and drop off at your hotel or designated points in Macau. This is more expensive, often several hundred HKD per person or per vehicle, but convenient if you have heavy luggage.
  • Regular city taxis cannot cross the border, so you cannot simply take a Hong Kong taxi to Macau.

Recommendation:

  • If you are traveling with multiple heavy luggage, the ferry is usually the most practical and cost-effective option. You can take a taxi or metro to the Sheung Wan or Tsim Sha Tsui ferry terminal and then board the ferry to Macau.
  • For overnight convenience or a very tight schedule, consider pre-booking a cross-border limousine, especially if traveling as a group with luggage.

In summary, for a Tuesday departure from Hong Kong city, take the ferry from Sheung Wan or Tsim Sha Tsui terminal. Expect reasonable luggage allowances, and pay extra only if you exceed the standard limits. Taxi or private car services are an option, but more expensive and require pre-booking.
