Forbidden city renovation ?

Hi, i have just read that there are ongoing renovations in the Forbidden city, for example the Tiananment Gate is covered . I know the site is very big, but how does this affect the touristic visit?

If someone has visited recently and can tell, thank you.

The Forbidden City is an enormous complex, covering over 180 acres, so even with ongoing renovations, most of the site remains accessible to visitors. Renovations are common, especially for major halls, gates, and courtyards, to preserve the historical structures.

Specifically regarding the Tiananmen Gate, if it is under renovation or covered, it may affect photography opportunities or limit access to that exact area. However, the rest of the central axis and major halls, like the Hall of Supreme Harmony, Hall of Central Harmony, and Hall of Preserving Harmony, are generally open.

From recent visitor reports, here’s what to expect:

  • Some main gates or buildings may be partially covered or scaffolded.
  • Certain courtyards may have restricted access or detours around renovation zones.
  • Visitor flow is usually well managed, so you can still follow the standard route through the inner and outer courts.

Tips for visiting during renovations:

  • Allow extra time for walking, as some detours can lengthen the route.
  • Check the official Forbidden City website or social media channels for the latest renovation updates before your visit.
  • If photography is important, plan your shots around areas that are unaffected by scaffolding.

Overall, renovations do not significantly diminish the experience. You will still be able to see the majority of the historical buildings, courtyards, and exhibits. Just be prepared for minor areas being temporarily inaccessible or visually obstructed.
