Hotel help

We will be taking a quick trip to Washington December 26th through the 28th, want to stay in what to stay around the national mall area so that we are close to what we want to see. I've never been so I don't know of great locations around there, I'm sure most of them would be sufficient but any advice would be helpful

For a quick trip to Washington DC from December 26th to 28th, staying near the National Mall is ideal since it places you within walking distance of most of the major attractions, including the Smithsonian museums, monuments, and memorials. This area is very convenient for sightseeing, but note that hotel rates can be higher during the holiday period, and availability may be limited, so booking early is recommended.

Here are some recommended areas and hotels around the National Mall:

  • Penn Quarter/Chinatown: Close to the National Mall, museums, the Capital One Arena, and plenty of restaurants. Hotels here are modern and convenient.
    • Courtyard by Marriott Washington Downtown/Convention Center
    • Kimpton Hotel Monaco Washington DC
    • Residence Inn by Marriott Washington Downtown
  • Near the Smithsonian Museums: Very walkable to the Mall, Air and Space Museum, Natural History, and American History.
    • The Willard InterContinental – historic and luxurious
    • Hamilton Hotel – classic, good value, walking distance to museums
  • Capitol Hill/Navy Yard: Slightly further but still close via Metro. Offers quieter neighborhoods and some newer hotels.
    • Hyatt Place Washington DC/National Mall
    • Capitol Hill Hotel

Tips for staying near the National Mall:

  • Check for Metro access even if walking is your main transportation; it provides flexibility in case of rain or cold weather.
  • Holiday crowds may be smaller than during summer, but some museums may have limited hours or special holiday closures.
  • If driving, consider that parking near the Mall can be expensive and limited; many hotels offer valet or nearby garages.

Overall, Penn Quarter or the immediate vicinity of the Smithsonian museums provides the most convenient access for a short, sightseeing-focused visit. It balances proximity to attractions, dining options, and ease of walking around the Mall area.
