Spring Training Ballparks?
Will be in Phoenix in two weeks, with my son. He's a diehard baseball fan.
Will check out Chase Field, but also wondering about the Spring Training sites there. Any can't miss for a baseball fan? Suggestions, tips, etc?
If you’re visiting Phoenix in a couple of weeks and your son is a diehard baseball fan, you’re in for a treat. Phoenix and the surrounding area are central to the Cactus League, where many Major League Baseball teams hold their Spring Training. This is a unique experience because the ballparks are smaller, more intimate, and often allow fans to get up close to the players.
Here are some of the key Spring Training ballparks and tips:
- Scottsdale Stadium (San Francisco Giants): Located in nearby Scottsdale, this stadium is very fan-friendly, with good sightlines and lots of player interaction before and after games. It’s also right in downtown Scottsdale, so you can grab food or drinks nearby.
- Salt River Fields at Talking Stick (Arizona Diamondbacks & Colorado Rockies): About 20–30 minutes from central Phoenix, this is a modern facility with multiple fields and excellent amenities. It’s spacious, and you can often walk around to watch batting practice and spring training drills.
- Camelback Ranch (Chicago White Sox & Los Angeles Dodgers): Located in Glendale, just northwest of Phoenix, this is another top-notch Spring Training venue. It’s very accessible and family-friendly, with lots of space to explore.
- Tempe Diablo Stadium (Los Angeles Angels): Small, cozy, and classic; gives a very intimate experience. You can often catch batting practice close-up, which is fun for kids.
Additional tips for Spring Training visits:
- Arrive early: You’ll get to see batting practice and sometimes catch foul balls or autographs.
- Check team schedules: Some games are doubleheaders or have special events for kids. Team websites often post special promotions.
- Parking is usually easy and inexpensive compared to regular-season MLB games.
- Bring sunscreen and hats: Even in February, Arizona sun can be intense during day games.
- Consider combining a visit with a regular MLB stadium tour at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix for a complete experience.
Overall, if your son is a baseball fan, a Cactus League Spring Training experience is more personal and interactive than a regular season MLB game. Between Chase Field and one or two Spring Training venues, you can have a memorable trip without driving excessively across the Phoenix area.
