seward as base and lodging near running
Hi,
We are a family of 6-7. We range in age from 17-58. We are planning to visit in June and are considering using Seward as our base for a few days or a week while we explore the area. The 17 year old will be a college runner and he wants to keep up his training while we are there. Can anyone recommend some lodging options that would be convenient to easy running.
Thanks so much,
Seward is an excellent base for exploring the Kenai Peninsula, and it also offers several safe and scenic areas for running, which is ideal for your 17-year-old college runner. Choosing lodging that is centrally located or near the waterfront will provide easy access to running routes while keeping your family comfortable.
Lodging Options Convenient for Running:
- Waterfront Hotels / Inns: Staying along the Seward waterfront or near the harbor offers direct access to flat, paved paths along the Resurrection Bay shore. These areas are scenic and safe for running, with views of the water and mountains. Examples include small boutique inns or lodges near the harbor.
- Central Seward Rentals: Vacation rentals in central Seward allow quick access to both the town and the waterfront trails. Many have multiple bedrooms, which is convenient for a family of 6–7. You can easily run on local streets or along the coastal trail.
- Hotels Near Exit Glacier Road: Some lodges or cabins are located closer to Exit Glacier and the surrounding parks. These offer slightly longer runs on quieter roads or trails and are scenic, but may involve some elevation changes.
Running Routes:
- The waterfront path along the harbor is roughly 2–3 miles one-way and mostly flat, perfect for daily training runs.
- Back streets of central Seward are lightly trafficked and connect well to the waterfront area, allowing loop runs of various distances.
- For longer or hill workouts, Exit Glacier Road and nearby trails provide safe, lightly trafficked routes with stunning scenery. These can be used for tempo or interval training if desired.
Additional Tips:
- Summer daylight in June is very long, so running early morning or late evening is easy and safe.
- Bring layered clothing; even in June, temperatures can be cool, and wind from the bay can be strong.
- Some rentals or lodges may provide laundry and kitchen facilities, which is convenient for an active runner and family stays.
In summary, choosing a central Seward lodging near the harbor or waterfront trails will balance easy access to running routes for your college runner with convenience for family activities and excursions. Vacation rentals or small inns along the waterfront are generally the most practical and scenic options for your family.
