Siesta Key south drawbridge construction
Does anyone know if the south drawbridge is still passable for pedestrian traffic? I would be coming from the south side of Stickney Point near Avenue A. Obviously I would need to be able to safely crossover to the north side of Stickney Point before the bridge since the south part of the bridge is under construction. I don't want to back track up to T. Trail to cross if I don't have to.
Good question. As of the most recent updates, here’s what is known about the Stickney Point Bridge construction (the “south drawbridge” to Siesta Key) and whether it’s passable for pedestrians — and what to expect if you’re trying to cross from the south side near Avenue A.
Current Status
- FDOT confirms that Stickney Point Bridge (SR 72) is under maintenance, but the construction schedule has been shifted to overnight hours (7 p.m. to 6 a.m.) to reduce daytime impacts.
- According to the latest bridge-repair project page, the work is nearing completion.
- Pedestrian infrastructure is mentioned in the District 1 road-watch reports: the project includes “intermittent sidewalk closures” — so not all pedestrian areas are guaranteed open at all times.
Pedestrian Crossing Considerations
- Because the work is largely at night now, during the day the bridge is more likely to be open for both vehicles and pedestrians, but the “intermittent sidewalk closures” mean there may be times when pedestrian access is restricted or rerouted.
- There’s no indication of a full, permanent closure to pedestrians — the bridge remains passable according to FDOT’s project documentation.
- That said, the construction work involves bridge openings and functional testing at night, which may generate noise and may require brief pedestrian detours or caution.
Recommendation for Your Route (South of Stickney Point near Avenue A)
- You’re reasonably likely to be able to cross on foot during the daytime — just watch for sidewalk closures or temporary detours. Check for posted signage and use caution.
- If you arrive later in the day or want to guarantee a pedestrian crossing, consider timing your walk when construction is inactive (i.e., outside the overnight work window).
- Alternatively, using the North Siesta Key Bridge (if feasible from your location) is a safer bet if you prefer to avoid any risk of pedestrian closure or detour. FDOT has even recommended using the north bridge to ease travel while construction continues.
- Before crossing, it’s wise to check real-time conditions (via local traffic apps, FDOT, or fl511) for any temporary sidewalk closures or alerts.
Bottom Line
Yes — the Stickney Point (south) bridge is currently under construction, but pedestrian access is still generally available, especially during daylight hours. It’s not fully blocked to walkers, but you will want to be alert for construction signage, temporary sidewalk closures, or detours. If you want to be absolutely safe, consider using the north bridge instead depending on your route.
