UK Credit Card To Use In Orlando.
Hi guys, first time visiting Orlando this year from the UK, looking forward to it!
Can anyone recommend a credit card for us to take with us? I already have a Chase account I am transferring our spending money to but I want a credit card with us as a back up if needed.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Visiting Orlando from the UK with a credit card backup is a smart idea, especially for a first-time trip. When selecting a credit card to take, it’s important to consider foreign transaction fees, acceptance in the US, contactless or chip compatibility, and potential travel benefits such as rental car insurance or purchase protection.
1) Recommended types of UK credit cards for US travel:
- Credit cards with no foreign transaction fees: These are ideal as they prevent additional charges (usually 2–3%) on every transaction made in USD. Examples include the Halifax Clarity Credit Card, Barclaycard Rewards, or Santander Zero Credit Card.
- Chip-and-signature or contactless cards: Most US merchants accept chip-and-signature cards, but contactless cards are increasingly used. Ensure your UK card has a chip, and keep a PIN handy just in case.
- Cards with travel perks: Some cards provide rental car insurance, travel insurance, or cashback on spending abroad. If your backup card has these, it can add peace of mind for both purchases and emergencies.
2) Practical tips for using UK credit cards in Orlando:
- Notify your bank that you will be traveling to the US to avoid potential fraud blocks.
- Check the card’s daily limit and availability of emergency cash or card replacement services abroad.
- Always have a secondary backup (either a second card or some cash in USD) in case a merchant only accepts certain card types or there’s a temporary technical issue.
- Some UK cards may charge dynamic currency conversion fees if you choose to pay in GBP instead of USD. Always pay in USD to avoid these fees.
- Keep your Chase account as your main source of spending and use the UK card only as backup or for purchases that require a credit card, like online bookings or security deposits.
3) Summary recommendation: Take one UK card with no foreign transaction fees, preferably with travel perks, in addition to your Chase account. Ensure you have the PIN, notify your bank of travel dates, and carry a small amount of USD for smaller purchases or tips. This combination should give you flexibility and security throughout your Orlando trip.
