VISA Application and/or Extension to HKG

Hi everyone. Thank you in advance to anyone who would answer my questions.

So I’m planning on going to Hong Kong sometime in July and will be staying with my Filipino Bf (he’s a permanent resident there, working and is renting his own place). I want to stay there for 2 months since I’ll be having a 3months vacation.

Question is should or can I apply for visa and if yes what type of visa? Or should I apply for an extension instead at the Hong Kong Immigration(?) once I’m there? Also what requirements/documents do I need to prepare.

Again, big thanks to anyone who could help.

As an Indian passport holder planning to visit Hong Kong for 2 months to stay with your Filipino boyfriend, you will need to understand Hong Kong’s visa rules and options for entry and extension.

Visa on Arrival / Entry Permit:

  • Indian passport holders generally require a visa to enter Hong Kong. For short visits (up to 14–60 days depending on purpose and approval), you need to apply for a Visitor Visa prior to arrival.
  • You cannot rely on visa-free entry; Hong Kong does not provide visa-free access for Indian passport holders.

Applying for a Hong Kong Visitor Visa:

  • You should apply at the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) or the Hong Kong Immigration Department if you are applying from outside Hong Kong.
  • The typical visa type for your case is a Tourist / Visit Visa (L visa), usually valid for 1–3 months.
  • Requirements generally include:
    • Completed visa application form
    • Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining
    • Passport-sized photographs
    • Proof of accommodation (your boyfriend’s rental agreement or hotel booking)
    • Return or onward flight tickets
    • Proof of financial means to support your stay

Extension after Arrival:

  • If you enter Hong Kong with a visa valid for less than 2 months, you can apply for an extension at the Hong Kong Immigration Department.
  • Extensions are discretionary and granted based on your purpose of stay, ties, and financial proof. You should apply for an extension before your visa expires.
  • Documents needed for extension typically include your passport, current visa, proof of accommodation, proof of funds, and a letter explaining your reason for extension.

Additional Tips:

  • Apply for the visa in advance to avoid any issues at arrival.
  • If your boyfriend is a permanent resident, providing a letter of invitation and proof of his residency may strengthen your application.
  • Check processing times and allow at least 4–6 weeks for visa approval before your planned travel.

In summary, you should apply for a Hong Kong Visitor Visa before traveling. Depending on the duration granted, you may need to apply for an extension while in Hong Kong. Make sure you prepare all required documents, including proof of accommodation, finances, and return flights, to maximize the chances of approval.
