Charlevoix/Petoskey

We are returning to Mackinaw Island this summer. Last year we stayed 2 nights in Petoskey.

We'd like to find a place in either town on the canal/lake for a few nights. Suggestions for places on the water to stay, and is 2 nights too many?

Thank you!

It sounds like you’re planning a wonderful trip back to Mackinaw Island and looking to explore the surrounding areas in Charlevoix and Petoskey. Both towns offer beautiful waterfront views, and staying by the lake or canal is a great way to enjoy the natural beauty of northern Michigan. Here are some suggestions for places to stay on the water and thoughts on whether 2 nights is too many:

  • Charlevoix:
    • Weathervane Terrace Inn & Suites: This hotel is located on Lake Michigan with great views of the harbor. It’s a charming spot with a cozy atmosphere and is right next to the marina, offering easy access to the water. There are also great walking paths nearby to explore the town.
    • The Edgewater Inn: Situated on Round Lake, this inn offers scenic views and is just a short walk from Charlevoix's downtown area. The rooms are comfortable, and you can enjoy the waterfront location right outside your window.
    • Pointes North Inn: Located near Lake Michigan, Pointes North offers lovely views of the water and is a short drive from downtown Charlevoix. It’s a great base if you want a relaxing stay by the lake with easy access to shops and restaurants.
  • Petoskey:
    • Bay Inn of Petoskey: This inn is located on Little Traverse Bay, offering great lakefront views. It’s a more affordable option, but still comfortable and with easy access to downtown Petoskey and the waterfront.
    • Hampton Inn & Suites Petoskey: Overlooking Lake Michigan, this hotel provides a great location near the waterfront with amenities like an indoor pool and fitness center. It’s perfect for a relaxing stay with beautiful views.
    • Odawa Hotel: While not directly on the water, it’s close to the waterfront, offering comfortable accommodations and a casino experience. If you’re looking for something more lively while still being near the bay, this could be a good option.

As for whether 2 nights is too many, it really depends on how much you want to relax and explore. Both Petoskey and Charlevoix are lovely towns to visit, and they offer plenty of activities like shopping, dining, and exploring the local parks or walking trails. If you enjoy a more laid-back experience with some time to relax by the water and soak in the views, then 2 nights is perfect. However, if you’re looking to explore more of the area or have a packed schedule, you could also consider just staying one night in each town or staying in one place and taking a day trip to the other.

In any case, both locations offer beautiful spots on the water and are fantastic places to enjoy the natural beauty of northern Michigan. Whether you choose to stay for one night or two, you’ll surely have a wonderful time!
