Northern California Recommendations

Hello! I will be searching the forums for ideas, but thought I would also post in case anyone loves opportunities to share about their favorite spots. My husband began working in Modesto this fall (I am currently in MN). I will be coming out to visit him March 14-22. We will be at his apartment during the work week, but will have Friday night - Sunday when I arrive. I am debating about flying into and/or out of Sacramento or San Francisco. Considering 1 - 2 nights in San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Napa area. We love the ocean and have interest in Sequoias/Redwoods. Not big wine people, but think the scenery could be pretty and potential spa day. We also enjoy traditional tourist offerings. Unfortunately I have a pretty intense fear of snakes that leads me to avoid any areas I think could result in an encounter. How would you suggest spending the weekend? Thank you!

For a short Northern California weekend trip in mid-March, given your interests and aversion to snakes, it’s best to focus on areas with scenic beauty, accessible trails, and low risk of encountering wildlife in more controlled environments. Since you’ll have Friday night through Sunday, a combination of San Francisco, Napa or Sonoma, and possibly a nearby forested area with Redwoods would make for a manageable itinerary.

Flying into San Francisco is generally the most convenient if you want to maximize sightseeing. Sacramento could be considered if you want shorter drives to Modesto, but you’ll miss some ocean views.

Here’s a suggested itinerary:

  • Friday night: Arrive in San Francisco, check into a centrally located hotel (Union Square, Fisherman’s Wharf, or Embarcadero) to make getting around easy. Enjoy a casual dinner near the waterfront or North Beach.
  • Saturday: Explore San Francisco’s classic sights:
    • Golden Gate Bridge – either drive or walk partway for photos.
    • Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 – enjoy the sea lions, shops, and views.
    • Alcatraz Island tour if booked in advance.
    • Optional short drive or stroll through Golden Gate Park for urban greenery.
  • Saturday afternoon/evening: Drive or take a scenic route to Napa or Sonoma for a relaxing evening. Even if wine tasting isn’t your priority, the scenery and spa options are excellent for relaxation.
  • Sunday: Consider a Redwoods day trip:
    • Muir Woods National Monument – an easy and safe walk among towering Redwoods; well-maintained paths minimize snake encounters.
    • Optional stop at Stinson Beach or Marin Headlands for ocean views on the way back.

Other tips and options:

  • If you’d rather include a mountain or lake experience, Lake Tahoe is possible, but mid-March can still have snow. Roads are generally safe, but avoid hikes in deep forested areas where snakes might be present.
  • Book accommodations in advance, especially for San Francisco and Napa/Sonoma, as mid-March weekends can be busy.
  • Consider renting a car in San Francisco for flexibility, especially if heading to Muir Woods or Napa.

With this plan, you get a balance of iconic city sights, ocean views, spa relaxation, and towering trees without venturing into areas where snake encounters are likely.
