Graffiti Art & scenic Colorado mountains

Arriving Thursday departing Sunday. Staying downtown Denver hoping to get some great views of the mountains and hit some street art spots. Likely do a day tour with a company to see the best areas with their experience. Where else to plan on safely driving from Downtown; worth the views and drive time? My 17 y.o. Son, his First time west from Ohio.

Hi there,

With a Thursday-to-Sunday visit to Denver, you can get a great mix of urban exploration, street art, and scenic mountain drives. Since this is your son’s first time out west, planning a balance of city-based activities and accessible mountain scenery will make it memorable.

Street Art & Urban Exploration in Denver:

  • RiNo (River North Art District): This area is the heart of Denver’s street art scene, with large murals, graffiti walls, galleries, and creative spaces. A guided street art tour will help you find the best spots and understand the artists’ stories.
  • Santa Fe Drive Arts District: Another excellent area for murals, with colorful displays along the street and nearby galleries.
  • Downtown & LoDo: Check for pop-up murals, alley art, and creative installations around 16th Street Mall and Union Station.

Mountain Views & Scenic Drives:

  • Lookout Mountain & Golden: About 30 minutes west of downtown, this is an easy drive with sweeping views of the foothills and Denver skyline. The town of Golden is charming, with historic Main Street and small local eateries.
  • Mount Evans Scenic Byway: One of the highest paved roads in North America. You can drive up to ~14,000 feet depending on snow closure (check in advance for early season). The views are incredible, and wildlife sightings are common. Accessible from Denver in about 1–1.5 hours.
  • Idaho Springs & Guanella Pass: Short drives from Denver with alpine views and easy hikes. Guanella Pass connects Georgetown and Grant, offering classic Colorado vistas and easy pull-offs for photos.
  • Echo Lake & Bear Creek Canyon: About 40–50 minutes from downtown, scenic routes with the option of short hikes or lakeside views, perfect for a half-day trip.

Additional Tips:

  • Arrive early for mountain drives to avoid traffic and for better light for photos.
  • Be mindful of altitude; drink water and take it easy on hikes or strenuous activity.
  • Winter or early spring snow may close some high mountain roads (like Mount Evans Scenic Byway or Guanella Pass), so always check conditions.
  • If you prefer guided options, many local companies offer half-day or full-day excursions combining street art in Denver with scenic mountain drives for first-time visitors.

In summary, RiNo and Santa Fe provide the best urban street art experience, while Lookout Mountain, Mount Evans, and the nearby passes offer safe, memorable mountain vistas for a first-time westward experience.
