Hong Kong and Shenzhen
Hi all
I am looking at flying to HK and spending about a week there and a couple of days in Shenzhen.
Would it be best to stay in Shenzhen on the days that I am there or travel from HK to Shenzhen for each visit?
TIA
When planning a trip to Hong Kong and Shenzhen, deciding whether to stay in Shenzhen or commute from Hong Kong depends on convenience, cost, and your itinerary.
Traveling from Hong Kong to Shenzhen daily:
- The border crossings (such as Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, or Futian) allow you to enter Shenzhen from Hong Kong relatively quickly, but crossing can take 30–60 minutes depending on queue times and your mode of transport.
- From the border to central Shenzhen, you may need an additional 30–45 minutes by metro or taxi, so daily commuting adds travel time.
- If you only have one or two days in Shenzhen and prefer to return to the comfort of your Hong Kong hotel, this can be manageable.
Staying in Shenzhen:
- Booking a hotel in Shenzhen for your days there saves commuting time, giving you more flexibility to explore the city, including shopping districts like Luohu, cultural sites, and dining areas.
- Accommodation in Shenzhen is generally less expensive than in Hong Kong, which can help reduce travel costs.
- You can return to Hong Kong by train, metro, or bus after your Shenzhen stay, making your trip smoother and less rushed.
Considerations:
- Visa and immigration: Check the requirements for entering Shenzhen from Hong Kong. Many nationalities, including UK and US citizens, can enter Shenzhen visa-free for short stays, but confirm the duration allowed.
- Time of year: During weekends or holidays, border crossings can get crowded, making daily commuting more time-consuming.
- Personal preference: If you prefer a relaxed pace and want to explore Shenzhen in more depth, staying overnight is generally recommended. For a quick visit focused on specific attractions, commuting from Hong Kong can be acceptable.
In summary, for a couple of days in Shenzhen, staying overnight in the city is usually more convenient and efficient, while commuting from Hong Kong is feasible for very short visits or if you prefer to remain in your Hong Kong accommodation.
