First Time in China Plan to visit Zhangjiajie National park

Hello

I am planning a trip to Zhangjiajie in November for 4 -5 nights . I am Canadian and plan to fly from Seoul . A couple of questions :

Do I need visa ? Based on what I read, the Hunan province allowed tourists 240 hours without visa requirement .

What is the main airport I need to fly in? Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport is ok . DYG ? How do I get from airport to hotel?

Any recommended hotel ? Do I need to purchase in advance the park entrance tickets ? Any secure website?

Thank you very much

For your planned trip to Zhangjiajie in November, here is a detailed guide regarding visas, transportation, accommodations, and park arrangements:

Visa Requirement:

As a Canadian passport holder, you generally require a Chinese visa to enter Mainland China. The 240-hour visa-free transit applies only to certain entry points and for travelers who are transiting through China without leaving the designated regions. Zhangjiajie is located in Hunan province, but the 240-hour transit policy is mainly for international transit via major airports such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Since your trip involves flying directly from Seoul to Zhangjiajie and planning to stay several nights, you will need a standard Chinese tourist visa (L visa).

Airport:

The main airport serving Zhangjiajie is Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG). It is a small regional airport with direct flights from several major Chinese cities, and occasionally international connections from nearby hubs such as Seoul or Beijing. It is suitable for your trip.

Transportation from Airport to Hotel:

  • Taxi: The easiest option. Airport taxis are available outside the terminal. The journey to the city center or nearby hotels usually takes around 30–40 minutes.
  • Hotel Shuttle: Some hotels offer airport pick-up services, which can be booked in advance.
  • Bus: There are airport shuttle buses to Zhangjiajie city center. Check schedules in advance as frequency may be limited.

Hotel Recommendations:

Zhangjiajie has a range of hotels from budget to luxury. Some popular options include:

  • Pullman Zhangjiajie Hotel – modern facilities and close to the city center.
  • Holiday Inn Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan – convenient for visiting the national park.
  • Local boutique hotels or guesthouses in Wulingyuan district – closer to park entrances for early access.

National Park Entrance Tickets:

It is strongly recommended to purchase Zhangjiajie National Forest Park tickets in advance, especially in November, as weekends can still be busy. You can buy tickets from official or reputable travel websites. Tickets are valid for a specific date and usually include access to cable cars, elevators, and shuttle buses inside the park.

  • Option 1: Official park website or authorized ticketing partners.
  • Option 2: Reputable Chinese travel agencies that allow online bookings with international payment.
  • Option 3: Some hotels can help book park tickets directly for guests.

Other Tips:

  • Check the weather forecast in November – it can be chilly, and some mountain areas may be foggy.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes as the park involves significant walking and stairs.
  • Consider staying near the park entrance to minimize daily travel time.

In summary, for a 4–5 night trip to Zhangjiajie, you need a Chinese tourist visa, fly into Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG), and plan transport and accommodations in advance. Pre-purchasing park tickets is recommended for a smoother experience.
