Compass tours - legit tour company?
I can't seem to find alot of information on this company, has anyone used them in skagway? I like the timing of the tour i am interested in better than others so was wondering.
Good question. Short answer: yes, Compass Tours in Skagway (also styled “Compass Tours” or “Compass Tours Alaska”) appears to be a legitimate, well-established tour company. There are plenty of offerings, and while there aren't *tons* of independent trip-advisor-style review threads about them specifically, what exists strongly suggests they’re not a fly-by-night scam.
Here’s a breakdown of what I found, plus some things to watch out for, and alternative options in case you’re comparing.
What I found about Compass Tours (Skagway):
- Compass Tours has a dedicated website for Alaska / Skagway excursions (“mycompasstours.com”) with many detailed tours listed.
- Their Skagway offerings are quite varied; for example:
- White Pass Summit Rail & Bus tour: ride the famous White Pass & Yukon Route train, plus bus.
- Yukon Suspension Bridge & Summit tour: includes historic Skagway, scenic drive up to the Chilkoot Mountains, and a stop at the Yukon suspension bridge.
- Sled Dog Adventure: guided historic tour plus a short sled ride with Alaskan huskies.
- Glacier Point Wilderness Safari: more remote, wilderness-style trip with fjords and rainforest scenery.
- Bennett Scenic Journey: bus + train to Carcross, Emerald Lake, with lunch.
- On their site, they clearly list "Compass Tours BBB Business Review" in their footer, which suggests some formal business registration / legitimacy.
- There is at least some discussion in cruise-traveler / trip-planning communities about Compass Tours: one TripAdvisor thread asked exactly your question (“Compass tours – legit tour company?”).
- In Facebook traveler-cruise-Alaska groups, people have asked for personal experiences with Compass Tours in Skagway (for example for the White Pass rail & bus), which suggests people are using them.
Things to consider / potential risks:
- Because Skagway is a very seasonal, port-of-call town (especially for cruise ships), there *are* general warnings about tour-company scams or less-reliable operators in Alaska. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has noted that some tourist companies in Alaska cancel at the last minute or don’t deliver on promises.
- It’s not entirely certain how many *independent, verified customer reviews* there are specifically for Compass Tours (compared to larger more reviewed companies). That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad — just that you might want to do your own due diligence.
- Make sure when you book:
- You confirm pick-up and drop-off details (where in Skagway you'll meet, how you return to your ship or port) — their site gives pick-up / meeting info.
- You check cancellation policy. While I didn’t find a *very granular* cancellation policy for Compass Tours easily, you should ask or read their terms. (Note: many shore-excursion companies have strict policies.)
- You look at photos / itinerary details carefully — some tours combine train + bus, others are purely wilderness, so make sure the “timing of the tour” you like really is what you think.
Alternative reputable tour companies in Skagway to compare:
- Skagway Tours: Very established, lots of TripAdvisor reviews.
- Bennett Scenic Journey (via Compass or other operators): if you like train + bus day-trip, this is an option.
- Other local outfitters: There are several Skagway-based operators listed by the Skagway Chamber of Commerce.
My assessment: Compass Tours in Skagway looks legit and reliable. Their tour descriptions are detailed, their business is publicly accessible, and they’re offering a good portfolio of excursions. While they may not have the massive social proof that some very large operators have, they are far from being an unknown or shady company.
If I were in your shoes and liked the timing of their tour better than others, I would feel reasonably comfortable booking with them — but I would also double-check recent reviews (Google, TripAdvisor, or from your cruise-line shore-excursion partner) and make sure the logistics align (pick-up, drop-off, cancellation) to minimize risk.
