Help with lodging decision for first time visitor.
I have researched for days and still uncertain where to stay. My husband and I are visiting next week (4 days) very last minute trip. We are in our 50s, healthy but not super active. A clean hotel/resort with nice pool and beach access, nice view with balcony, maximum budget $600 a night. I would like a day at beach with comfy seating/umbrella to read a book and nap. I don't need to get in the water, just see and hear it. Food & Drink service at the beach would be great. Husband enjoys the same but at the pool. One day we would like to go to the zoo, one day an excursion to see the missions, bike ride, or kayak. It would be nice to walk to dining, shops, etc. but not totally opposed to renting car. Should we do 2 nights in La Jolla and 2 in Coronado? Spontaneous planning doesn't allow for much research. Any hotels that check most of the boxes? Thanks for advice!
For a first-time visit to San Diego with your preferences—clean hotel/resort, nice pool and beach access, balcony views, budget up to $600/night, and convenience for excursions—a combination of La Jolla and Coronado can work well. La Jolla offers stunning ocean views, boutique hotels, and walkable dining, while Coronado provides a classic beach resort feel with easy access to downtown San Diego.
Here’s a suggested approach for your 4-day trip:
- Days 1–2: La Jolla – Ideal for relaxing on the beach, enjoying ocean views, and walking around a charming neighborhood with shops and dining. La Jolla Shores Beach offers umbrellas, loungers, and occasional food/beverage service.
- Day 3–4: Coronado – Great for a classic resort experience, poolside relaxation, and easy access to Coronado Beach with comfy seating and service. Also convenient for exploring downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp Quarter, and excursions to the missions or kayak rentals.
Hotel recommendations that fit most of your criteria:
- La Jolla Shores Hotel: Oceanfront rooms with balcony, nice pool, walkable to restaurants, steps from La Jolla Shores Beach. Beach chairs and umbrellas available; small beachfront service may be offered.
- La Valencia Hotel: Iconic La Jolla property, upscale boutique feel, ocean views, pool, beautiful terrace, walking distance to shops and dining. Some rooms have balcony with ocean view.
- Hotel del Coronado: Classic beachfront resort, ocean-view rooms with balcony, multiple pools, full beachfront service with umbrellas, chairs, and food/drink. Walkable to Coronado shops and restaurants, great for a relaxing beach day.
- Coronado Island Marriott: Poolside and partial ocean-view rooms, quieter beachfront access, and easy drive to downtown San Diego for excursions.
For your planned activities:
- San Diego Zoo: Allocate a half to full day. Consider staying near downtown or Coronado for a shorter drive.
- Excursions (missions, kayaking, bike ride): La Jolla and Coronado are both convenient. Mission San Diego de Alcalá is an easy drive; kayaking around La Jolla Cove is iconic; bike rentals are available along the bay and beachfront paths.
- Beach & Pool Days: Schedule one full day at La Jolla Shores for ocean views and one day at Coronado or your hotel pool for lounging and reading.
Transportation advice:
- If you stay in La Jolla and Coronado, you may want a rental car for flexibility, especially for excursions to the zoo and missions. Otherwise, rideshare options are convenient but can be slower.
- Both areas are walkable for casual strolls and dining, so you can minimize driving once settled at each hotel.
Overall, this plan balances beach relaxation, pool enjoyment, sightseeing, and minimal stress. Booking a La Jolla hotel for 2 nights and Coronado for 2 nights maximizes your San Diego experience while giving you both oceanfront luxury and a classic resort feel. Prioritize Hotel del Coronado if beachfront service and comfort are top priorities, and La Valencia or La Jolla Shores for a mix of charm, beach access, and proximity to dining.
