Where History Meets Modernity: The Design Beauty of Thompson Madrid

On the newly revitalized Calle de Montrel, Madrid’s history and present intertwine as Thompson Madrid opens its doors in a building rich with unique heritage. This site was once the 18th-century San Luis Bishop’s Church and later the iconic Arias Department Store, a symbol of an era. Today, this legacy is reborn through the creative vision of López y Tena Architects, transforming it into a space that blends memory with contemporary design.

The journey begins in the lobby. The welcoming reception desk resembles a travel suitcase, while the concierge area is thoughtfully designed as a “home-like” space, making it easy for guests to plan their trips. Natural light filters through two internal courtyards, illuminating the comfortable and inviting public areas, encouraging guests to explore the entire building at a leisurely pace.

Thompson Madrid offers 174 rooms, including 23 suites and a penthouse suite. Each room features local materials such as marble, wood, and leather, merging art with practical details into a cohesive design language. All rooms include a “traveler’s corner,” a special space to pause, gaze out the window, and immerse in the moment.

The penthouse suite, designed by interior designer Luisa Olazábal, spans 222 square meters over two floors: one for reception and living, the other dedicated to rest. Mid-century modern furniture, carefully selected artworks, and expansive views of Madrid make it a unique space.

On the fourth floor, the meeting rooms continue the hotel’s ambiance. Breaking the stereotype of traditional workspaces with a lounge style: thoughtfully arranged lighting, comfortable furniture, and rooms named after iconic women in Spanish history and culture, giving business and social gatherings a distinctive character.

Every corner of Thompson Madrid is designed to make the stay part of the city experience. It is not just a place to rest but a starting point to explore Madrid, allowing guests to truly feel the city from the inside out.
