Transportation for a Kamikochi self-guided trip: Departing from Takayama by bus!

For this Kamikochi self-guided trip, I chose to depart from Takayama by bus, with a transfer at Hirayu Onsen. The journey was smooth, and I even got to enjoy a relaxing soak in the hot springs along the way—totally worth it!

In the morning, I boarded a bus at the Takayama Nohi Bus Center heading directly to Hirayu Onsen, which took about an hour. The route offers stunning views of the Northern Alps, providing a truly therapeutic visual experience. Upon arriving at Hirayu Onsen Station, there’s a dedicated shuttle bus to Kamikochi (as private cars are not allowed). The transfer timing is perfect—not rushed, yet without long waits. I got off at Taisho Pond, which is the breathtaking entrance to Kamikochi! The crystal-clear lake reflects the distant Hotaka mountain range, creating a serene, picture-perfect scene. From Taisho Pond, you can take a leisurely walk to Kappa Bridge, snapping photos along the way and enjoying the continuous scenery. The walk takes about an hour, making it ideal for a relaxed exploration.

This bus route has reliable schedules, and purchasing a one-day pass or round-trip ticket is very convenient. A special reminder: Kamikochi is open from mid-April to mid-November each year, so be sure to check the seasonal transportation information!
