Immersive Cultural Experience
I didn't do the full overnight temple stay, but I participated in the Lotus Lantern Making workshop offered at the Templestay Information Center across the street—and it was fantastic! It was a hands-on, engaging way to connect with Korean Buddhist culture. The staff and volunteers were incredibly kind and patient, walking us through the steps of creating our own beautiful paper lanterns. This is an absolutely perfect activity for travelers looking for a deeper cultural immersion beyond just looking at the architecture. It gives you context and a meaningful, handmade souvenir to take home. They also offer the unique experience of Balwoo Gongyang (traditional temple food) nearby. If you want more than a photo op, definitely look into one of their daily programs or workshops for a genuine insight into monastic life.
