Airport woes

I know I'm only repeating things others have said already but WOW. The airport is an absolute sh** show. Just returned home yesterday from my 17th trip, the previous one being last February. It was bad then, but it's beyond out of control now.

My luggage never came out- My flight only had 16 people on it, and no one's bags came out, after 50 minutes. We had to hail down someone from baggage to find them. Baggage claim was wall to wall people, waiting a long time as only 1 carousel was working.

Then, returning home- Wednesday 2:21 pm flight- Security was fine- maybe 7 minutes tops. And then the fun began. Wall to wall people, in every corner, every seat, standing all over. I checked my gate and knew I had 25 mins before boarding so I headed back upstairs as there are a few benches and chairs right past security. I checked the app repeatedly and went downstairs 6 mins before boarding time. I never heard any announcements, although if there was one, it was so loud in there, not sure I would've heard it. Got to my gate only to find out boarding was closed! I was there with 3 others, who didn't hear an announcement or anything on the board. We explained this and the gate agent said "Well, the other 25 people on your flight sure did!" Ok then. I get her job is difficult with it being such a mob scene day in and day out, but it wasn't even officially time to board yet! Anyway, I was last on the plane, which was fine.

I have another trip planned for November. I don't want to do the drive, but I hope they have at least a little more organization come then. And hopefully the renovations get done quickly! Just wanted everyone who isn't familiar, to be aware of the ever increasing chaos that is Key West airport.

But, still a great time, despite that and the crappy, colder weather!

It sounds like your recent experience at Key West International Airport (EYW) highlights some of the challenges that have been increasingly reported by travelers. While the airport is small, its popularity, especially during peak tourist seasons, can make even routine operations feel chaotic.

Luggage and baggage claim issues:

  • Even on flights with few passengers, delays can occur due to limited baggage carousels and staffing shortages.
  • It's common to experience longer waits at the single operational carousel, and locating staff can be necessary if bags do not appear promptly.
  • Arriving early at baggage claim and staying near staff can sometimes help expedite the process if your luggage doesn't come out quickly.

Boarding and gate challenges:

  • The airport's small size combined with high passenger volume can lead to crowding and confusion at gates.
  • Announcements may be hard to hear over the crowd noise, and not all passengers may receive timely boarding updates.
  • Being proactive by checking boarding passes, app updates, and heading to the gate early (or staying near it) is advisable, especially when traveling with tight connections.

Tips for future trips:

  • Arrive at the airport earlier than usual, even for small flights, to account for crowding and potential delays at security or baggage claim.
  • Monitor airline apps closely for boarding notifications and gate changes.
  • Consider staying near your gate as boarding time approaches to avoid missing announcements.
  • Pack carry-on essentials in case checked baggage is delayed.
  • Be patient — Key West airport is undergoing renovations to improve passenger experience, but during this transition, congestion may continue.

Despite these challenges, many travelers continue to enjoy Key West for its unique charm, scenic beauty, and relaxed atmosphere. Planning ahead and staying aware of the airport's limitations can help mitigate stress and ensure that your trip remains enjoyable, even if the airport experience is less than ideal.
