Port Canaveral to Orlando airport advice please
Hello
I'll depart a cruise in Port Canaveral around 08:30 but my flight doesn't depart until 22:55 from Orlando airport.
I had originally booked a cruise excursion including Kennedy Space Centre then transfer to the airport but it would get us to the airport around 15:00. Far too early for our flight.
I wondered about hiring a car but it looks expensive as the drop off location would be different from the pick up.
Are there any other options please? I'd love to visit Kennedy so I wonder if we could arrange for luggage to be stored somewhere.
Since you’re disembarking at Port Canaveral at 08:30 and your flight from Orlando is not until 22:55, you have quite a bit of time to work with. The main challenges are: how to get to Orlando efficiently, how to make a stop at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), and where to store your luggage in the meantime.
Here are some practical options and tips:
- Luggage storage at Port Canaveral: Several companies offer luggage storage near the cruise terminal. This allows you to explore without dragging suitcases around. Examples include LuggageHero and Bounce, as well as some local hotels that offer day storage for non-guests.
- Private shuttle or car service with flexible timing: Consider booking a private car or shuttle that can take you to KSC first and then to Orlando airport. Companies like GoPortCanaveral or Mears Transportation allow custom trips and can handle luggage for an extra fee.
- Rental car drop-off at Orlando Airport: Some rental companies allow one-way rentals with pickup at Port Canaveral and drop-off at MCO. Although more expensive, it gives you flexibility to visit KSC at your own pace. Check smaller agencies as well, sometimes they have lower one-way fees than major chains.
- Bus + luggage service: If you want a lower-cost option, you could take a bus from Port Canaveral to Titusville (near KSC), then Uber or taxi to the entrance. Some luggage storage services will hold bags while you visit the park. After your visit, you can arrange a direct shuttle to Orlando airport.
- Combination of shuttle and Uber: Another option is a shuttle from Port Canaveral to KSC, then an Uber/Lyft from KSC to Orlando airport. This avoids renting a car while still allowing flexibility and luggage storage via a service or at KSC’s guest services (they offer a locker for day visitors in some cases).
Additional tips:
- Allow extra time for airport security — MCO can get busy, especially in the evening.
- If visiting KSC, plan for at least 3–4 hours to see the main attractions comfortably.
- Check luggage policies carefully — some storage services require reservations and may limit the size or weight.
- Booking a private car for the day might cost more than the other options, but it removes stress and keeps your day flexible, especially when coordinating with KSC opening hours.
Overall, if budget allows, the easiest stress-free approach is: drop luggage at a Port Canaveral storage facility, hire a private car to KSC for a few hours, then continue directly to Orlando airport for your flight. If you prefer cheaper options, a combination of shuttle/bus and luggage storage could also work, though it requires more coordination.
