Things to do/see in Echo Park and Silver Lake
I'm putting together an itinerary for a few days in LA. Want to spend one of those days in Silver Lake/ Echo Park neighborhoods. What are some interesting places to see/ things to do there? I'm not too much into super touristy stuff. Like to check out local vibes, hidden gems, and such.
Echo Park and Silver Lake are some of LA’s most vibrant neighborhoods, known for their creative, artsy vibes, eclectic shops, and scenic spots. Spending a day exploring them is a great way to experience local culture away from the usual tourist traps.
Things to Do and See:
- Echo Park Lake: A beautiful spot for a leisurely stroll around the lake, paddle boating, or enjoying the lotus blooms (seasonal). Great for photography and people-watching.
- Angelus Temple & Historic Architecture: Check out some of the historic buildings and local architecture in the area, especially along Sunset Boulevard.
- Silver Lake Reservoir: Popular for walking or jogging around the reservoir path. Offers peaceful views and is less crowded than Echo Park Lake.
- Street Art & Murals: Both neighborhoods have vibrant street art. Explore the alleyways and side streets to find murals, including notable works along Sunset Boulevard and Silver Lake Boulevard.
- Local Cafés & Coffee Shops: Some favorites include Intelligentsia Coffee, Lamill, and Alfred Coffee for great coffee and local ambiance.
- Independent Boutiques & Record Stores: Silver Lake has unique shops like Skylight Books, Amoeba Music, and small boutique clothing stores perfect for browsing.
- Farmers Markets: Check if there’s a local market during your visit — they often have artisanal foods, flowers, and crafts.
- Dining: Enjoy a casual meal at places like Sqirl, Pine & Crane, or Night + Market Song for local flavors and trendy dining.
- Sunset Views: Take a drive or walk up to the hills around Silver Lake for panoramic views of LA, particularly beautiful in the late afternoon.
Tips:
- Wear comfortable walking shoes; both neighborhoods are very walkable.
- Parking can be limited, so consider rideshare or plan for street parking.
- Take your time wandering — a large part of the charm is in the unexpected finds along residential streets and side alleys.
- Check local event listings — Silver Lake often hosts small art shows, pop-up markets, and live music events that add to the local vibe.
With this plan, you can enjoy a relaxed, culturally rich day exploring Echo Park and Silver Lake while immersing yourself in LA’s local scene.
