Where to stay in San Diego
Me and my Wife are from England and are planning to go to San Diego next February. Can anyone tell us which is the best area to stay and if possible some nice Hotels in those areas
San Diego is a large city with several neighborhoods offering different experiences, so the best area to stay depends on what you want to do during your trip. For first-time visitors, the most popular and convenient areas are Downtown, Gaslamp Quarter, La Jolla, and Mission Bay/Hotel Circle.
Downtown / Gaslamp Quarter:
- Pros: Central location, walking distance to restaurants, bars, shopping, and the USS Midway Museum. Easy access to public transport and Uber/Lyft.
- Cons: Can be busy and nightlife-oriented, not much beach access directly.
- Hotel suggestions:
- Pendry San Diego – upscale, modern, rooftop pool
- Kimpton Hotel Palomar – boutique style, central location
- Omni San Diego Hotel – connected to Petco Park, convenient for baseball games
La Jolla:
- Pros: Beautiful coastal scenery, boutique shopping, fine dining, beach access, more relaxed vibe.
- Cons: Slightly further from central San Diego attractions, higher prices.
- Hotel suggestions:
- La Valencia Hotel – iconic, romantic, ocean views
- Empress Hotel – boutique, near shops and beaches
- Estancia La Jolla Hotel – spacious, elegant grounds, great pool
Mission Bay / Hotel Circle:
- Pros: Family-friendly, close to SeaWorld, easy access to beaches, good for driving to different attractions.
- Cons: Less character than downtown, more car-dependent.
- Hotel suggestions:
- Catamaran Resort Hotel – bayfront, tropical feel, nice pool
- Paradise Point Resort – spacious rooms, water activities, pool options
- Bahia Resort Hotel – bay views, relaxed vibe, family-friendly
Other areas to consider:
- Coronado Island – scenic, quiet, luxury resorts, close to beaches, but slightly more isolated.
- Old Town – historic area with cultural sites, boutique hotels, good for short stays.
Summary: If you want nightlife, dining, and central location, Downtown/Gaslamp is ideal. For scenic beaches and romantic atmosphere, La Jolla is best. For family-friendly, easy beach access, and proximity to attractions like SeaWorld, Mission Bay or Hotel Circle is a solid choice. In February, the weather is mild but can be cooler, so choosing a hotel with indoor amenities like a pool or heated spa can be a plus.
