Family Friendly Activities/Restaurants
Hi All,
We are headed to San Diego in two weeks! We are bringing our 7 year old and 2 year old. We rented a condo at Capri by the Sea. The condo owner gave us some restaurant suggestions, but I don't feel like they are very kid friendly looking at their websites? Would love ideas on what to do during the day--besides the zoo and places to eat at night. We would love to find places that are on the beach and kid friendly.
Also, we will be there April 1st-5th. It looks like temperature is around 67 degrees, so sweaters and maybe shorts? Pants?
Thank you!
San Diego in early April is a great time for a family trip, with mild temperatures averaging around 67°F. You’ll want a mix of outdoor activities, beach time, and kid-friendly dining options. Dressing in layers is ideal—shorts or light pants, with sweaters or jackets for cooler mornings and evenings.
Daytime Activities for Families with Young Kids:
- La Jolla Shores Beach: Perfect for young children to play in the sand and paddle in the shallow water. There are restrooms and nearby cafés.
- Belmont Park: Classic beachfront amusement park in Mission Beach. Rides, arcade games, and mini-golf for all ages.
- Seaport Village: Strolling area with shops, live entertainment, and harbor views—nice for a relaxed morning or afternoon.
- San Diego Children’s Pool & La Jolla Cove: Watch the seals and tide pools; easy short walks and interesting wildlife for kids.
- Balboa Park Gardens and Outdoor Spaces: Beyond the Zoo, the botanical gardens, walking paths, and playgrounds provide open space for young kids to run and explore.
- Coronado Beach: Wide, sandy beach with gentle waves. Great for building sandcastles and walking along the shore.
Kid-Friendly Restaurants:
- The Broken Yolk Café: Family-friendly breakfast and brunch options with large portions and kid menus.
- Liberty Public Market (Point Loma): Multiple food vendors, casual atmosphere, and plenty of seating for families.
- Pizza Port (Solana Beach or Ocean Beach): Casual pizza, pasta, and craft sodas. Good for kids and relaxed dining.
- Boardwalk or beachfront casual eateries: Many near Mission Beach and Pacific Beach offer outdoor seating, kid menus, and views of the ocean.
Additional Tips:
- Pack sunscreen, hats, and comfortable walking shoes for outdoor activities.
- Check local tide schedules if you plan to explore tide pools or the Children’s Pool in La Jolla.
- Plan early breakfasts or lunch at popular spots to avoid crowds, especially on weekends.
- Consider alternating more structured activities (museums, parks) with open playtime at the beach or playgrounds to keep younger children engaged.
Overall, your itinerary can balance beach fun, light sightseeing, and casual dining that caters to both adults and kids. Layered clothing will keep everyone comfortable as temperatures shift throughout the day.
