Lantau Island- getting around
Hi all,
I’ve got the below things planned to do in 1 day next week. I understand that points 1-4 are relatively close by and can be reached by bus/taxi etc once I'm on the island at the cable car stop.
However what’s the best option to get from Tai O to Citygate outlets right at the end?
Finally from Citygate back to TST- I assume MTR is the most convenient option?
1. 10am Ride the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car.
2. Visit Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery
3. Explore Tai O Fishing Village.
4. Tai O Sightseeing Boat | 20mins Tai O Boat Trip
5. Citygate outlets
6. TST hotel
Thanks!
Your one-day plan for Lantau Island is feasible, but here’s how to best handle transportation for the later part of your itinerary.
After exploring Tai O Fishing Village and taking the sightseeing boat:
- The most straightforward way to get to Citygate Outlets from Tai O is by public bus. Bus route 11 or 11A runs from Tai O to Tung Chung Town Centre, which is right by Citygate Outlets. The journey typically takes about 45–50 minutes, depending on traffic.
- Alternatively, if you prefer comfort and speed, you can take a taxi from Tai O to Citygate Outlets. This will be faster (around 30–40 minutes) but more expensive, likely in the range of HKD 200–250.
Once at Citygate Outlets:
- To return to Tsim Sha Tsui (TST), the easiest method is indeed the MTR. From Tung Chung MTR Station (adjacent to Citygate Outlets), take the Tung Chung Line to Hong Kong Station, then transfer via the Tsuen Wan Line or the Airport Express + interchange depending on your TST hotel location. The total journey typically takes around 40–50 minutes.
- Alternatively, a taxi from Citygate to TST is possible but will be more costly and subject to traffic.
Additional tips:
- Consider leaving Tai O by bus by mid-afternoon to allow enough shopping time at Citygate Outlets before heading back to TST.
- Check the last bus departure times from Tai O to avoid being stranded or needing a taxi unexpectedly.
Following this plan should make your day smooth and allow you to enjoy each activity without rushing excessively.
