Seeking hotel/resort recos

Hello! I have been reading the forums and reviews but still a bit conflicted in where to book for a 9 night stay after Christmas through to early January. We are a family of four including two boys ages 13-15 (turning 16 when we are there). Looking for a resort that won't be jammed with people, with an relaxed Arizona feel, but enough good dining and enough activities that will allow us to stay onsite for the day - golf, sport, hike, swim while avoiding crowds. Our kids appreciate good food :) Any input welcome! We have considered the JW Marriott Camelback, Omni Montelucia, Sanctuary, and Westin Kierland but am not sure....

For a 9-night stay in Scottsdale with two teenage boys, you want a resort that balances relaxation, space, and plenty of activities onsite without feeling overcrowded, especially since this is during the post-Christmas/New Year peak season. Each of the properties you mentioned has its strengths, but there are some distinctions that may help you decide.

JW Marriott Camelback Inn

This resort has a classic Arizona ranch feel with spacious casitas and beautiful desert views. It offers multiple pools, a golf course, and fitness/wellness activities. The dining is solid, with a few options that are well-suited for families.

  • Pros:
    • Large property, so crowds are spread out.
    • Golf course onsite.
    • Several pools, some quieter than others.
    • Scenic desert hikes nearby without leaving property.
  • Cons:
    • Can still be busy during peak holiday weeks.
    • Some restaurants may require reservations well in advance.

Omni Montelucia

This is an upscale resort with Mediterranean architecture and luxury touches. It has multiple pools, a golf course, and a spa. It's slightly more boutique-feeling than JW Marriott, but it can be lively during holidays.

  • Pros:
    • Beautiful design and desert setting.
    • Multiple pools including family-friendly areas.
    • Good on-site dining options.
    • Golf course nearby.
  • Cons:
    • Holiday crowds can make pools and restaurants busy.
    • Not as spread out as JW Marriott; walking around property is easier but less secluded.

Sanctuary on Camelback

This is a smaller, more exclusive property with a boutique feel. It is quiet, luxurious, and has incredible views, but it is less activity-oriented for teens. Pools are smaller, and the focus is on relaxation and fine dining.

  • Pros:
    • Very quiet and upscale.
    • Stunning desert and mountain views.
    • Excellent dining and spa experience.
  • Cons:
    • Limited activities onsite for teens.
    • Smaller pools and fewer family-friendly amenities.

Westin Kierland

This resort is excellent for families, with a large water park-style pool area, plenty of sports options, and accessible golf. It tends to feel more lively, which may appeal to teens looking for activities without leaving the resort.

  • Pros:
    • Great family amenities: large pool, slides, and sports courts.
    • Onsite golf and tennis.
    • Multiple dining options, casual and upscale.
    • Spacious grounds, so even during holidays, the pool area can feel spread out.
  • Cons:
    • More of a “resort vibe” rather than secluded desert retreat.
    • Can be busy during peak holiday periods.

Summary & Recommendations:

  • If your priority is family-friendly amenities, teens’ activities, and a more casual resort vibe: Westin Kierland is a strong choice.
  • If you want a classic Arizona experience with golf, pools, and slightly more space between guests: JW Marriott Camelback Inn is excellent.
  • If you want luxury, privacy, and quiet, but your teens may need to find off-property activities: Sanctuary is ideal.
  • If you want a balance of luxury and activity, but slightly smaller property than JW: Omni Montelucia is a good compromise.

Considering your desire to avoid crowds while keeping teens entertained and having good dining onsite, I would rank your top choices for a family of four as: 1) Westin Kierland, 2) JW Marriott Camelback, 3) Omni Montelucia, 4) Sanctuary.
