I've enjoyed this forum and have had so many of my questions already answered just by reading old posts, however have a few last minutes thoughts. My husband and I will be coming soon for a one night stay in KW and then a three night stay at Lime Tree Bay Resort in Layton. Our plane lands at noon at FLL and we are driving straight to Key West that first night and staying at the BW Hibiscus. My plan for that first evening is to check in at the hotel, then walk to see the sunset celebration (maybe dinner at Sunset Pier if not too busy?). Planning to watch the sunset, enjoy a drink or two at whatever place catches our eye, then head back to the hotel. Is it safe to walk back to the hotel after dark?
We plan to spend the next morning walking around and/or maybe a tour (Conch Train?), grabbing lunch, then heading out. If you had one place for lunch that would be a good 'Key West' experience, where would you go? Would rather have a great outdoor/people watching experience than a hole-in-the wall that could be anywhere, no dietary restrictions, seafood ok, but not a must.
Thank you - excited for our trip!
With only 18 hours in Key West, your plan is very doable and should be enjoyable. Walking around Old Town and taking in the sunset is a classic Key West experience.
Safety Walking at Night:
Key West is generally considered safe for tourists, especially around Duval Street and Mallory Square where the sunset celebration occurs. That said, it’s always wise to take basic precautions at night:
Walking back from Sunset Pier to the Best Western Hibiscus (located near the southern end of Duval Street) is generally safe, and it’s only about a 10–15 minute walk depending on your exact route.
Evening Plan:
Your plan to enjoy the sunset, have a drink, and maybe grab a bite at Sunset Pier works well. If it’s busy, there are plenty of nearby bars and restaurants along Duval Street that offer drinks with outdoor seating, so you can absorb the Key West nightlife without feeling rushed.
Next Morning Activities:
The Conch Train Tour is a great way to see the island quickly and learn a bit about its history. Walking around after the tour is ideal if you want to explore shops, galleries, and the historic architecture.
Lunch Suggestions for a Classic Key West Experience:
Since your priority is outdoor seating and people watching, Blue Heaven or Conch Republic Seafood Company are top picks. Both offer the quintessential Key West vibe and allow you to enjoy the island’s atmosphere without feeling rushed.
With this plan, you’ll get a mix of the famous sunset, lively streets, classic Key West food, and some local history—all within a short overnight stay. Walking and enjoying the key spots makes it easy to maximize your limited time.
