Yasaka Shrine is the symbol of Kyoto's Gion district.
The towering vermilion gate at the end of Shijo Street is truly one of Kyoto's most picturesque spots.
Affectionately known as "Gion-san" since ancient times, the shrine is bustling with worshippers as it is dedicated to the gods of warding off evil, matchmaking, and beauty.
The shrine grounds are home to the Utsukushi Gozensha Shrine, the shrine of the goddess of beauty, and it is said that applying a little of the "beauty water" from the spring to your skin will help maintain your beauty.
At Okuninushi Shrine, you can also be granted blessings for matchmaking, and the corridors lined with vermilion shrine buildings are photogenic no matter where you take a photo!
The shrine is lit up at night, creating a fantastical atmosphere that is completely different from the daytime.
