Winter travel

We are planning a road trip (with a dog) from California to Texas mid December. I have never been to Sedona and it is on my bucket list. We will only have about a day and a half to spend there. I'm wondering if a stop in Sedona is worth it in the winter or would it be better to visit in a warmer time of year (spring or summer).

Sedona in mid-December can be a very enjoyable stop for a short road trip. While the temperatures are cooler than in spring or summer, winter in Sedona is generally mild during the day, making outdoor activities like short hikes and scenic drives still very pleasant. The red rock formations are striking year-round, and the crisp winter air often provides clear skies and excellent visibility for photography.

Here are some points to consider for a one-and-a-half-day visit in winter:

  • Weather: Daytime highs usually range from the mid-50s to low 60s °F, and nights can be chilly, sometimes dropping below freezing. Dress in layers, and be prepared for occasional wind or frost.
  • Hiking: Many of the popular trails, such as Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Devil’s Bridge, are still accessible, but shorter hikes are advisable if temperatures are cooler. Trails can be less crowded than in peak seasons.
  • Dog-friendly: Sedona is generally dog-friendly, with several trails and outdoor areas where leashed dogs are welcome. Always check trail regulations before heading out.
  • Scenic drives: Even if you don’t have time for long hikes, drives like Red Rock Scenic Byway (SR 179) and Oak Creek Canyon offer spectacular views and easy stops for photos.
  • Tourist activity: Winter is considered the low season, so restaurants and shops are less crowded, and accommodations may be more affordable.

In summary, visiting Sedona in winter is definitely worthwhile if you have limited time. While spring and fall offer warmer weather and longer daylight hours for extensive hiking, a winter visit allows you to enjoy the scenery with fewer crowds, mild daytime temperatures, and the unique ambiance of the desert in winter.

  • Option to do shorter hikes and scenic drives to maximize your limited time.
  • Consider starting early in the day to enjoy the warmer part of the day outdoors.
  • Check for seasonal closures or reduced hours at some attractions or restaurants in December.

Overall, a winter stop in Sedona can be very rewarding and allows you to experience the beauty of the red rocks even with a compact schedule.
