Ding Ding Trams.
Seven of us are travelling to Hong Kong shortly. A mix of adults, senior citizens and children.
We will want to travel on the Ding Ding Trams when there. Each of us should have an Octopus card.
Do we all tap our card when we board or leave the tram and can one card be used to pay for each person or do we select for each adult/child and pay individually?
Most likely we will travel from Wan Chai area to Kennedy town and back again.
Do we pay for "stages" or is it a flat fare for the entire journey?

The Hong Kong “Ding Ding” trams are a fun and iconic way to travel along Hong Kong Island. Here’s how to use them with Octopus cards for your group of seven:
Octopus Card Usage:
- Each passenger must have their own Octopus card. One card cannot be used to pay for multiple people.
- When boarding, tap your card once on the reader at the front of the tram. There is no need to tap when leaving—the fare is automatically deducted based on where you board.
- Both adults and children need to tap individually. Senior citizens may be eligible for concessions with an Elder Octopus card if they have one.
Fare System:
- Trams use a flat fare system regardless of distance traveled. Currently, the adult fare is HK$3.00 per ride for the entire journey.
- You do not pay by stages; the same fare applies whether you travel from Wan Chai to Kennedy Town or just a short distance.
Practical Tips:
- Ensure each Octopus card has sufficient balance before boarding.
- Board at the rear or middle doors if you are traveling with children and need extra space; the front is where you tap in.
- Trams are frequent, but during peak hours they can be crowded. Hold onto handrails if standing.
So for your trip: everyone taps their own card once on boarding, fare is flat, and one card cannot cover multiple passengers.
